Police officers will demonstrate in Brussels on Monday

Brussels police officers will demonstrate in front of the police station in rue des Palais in Brussels, which contains the technical traffic service, on Monday. This was announced by La Dernière Heure on Sunday. They are protesting against the order to regulate traffic on roundabouts without being armed from the 1st of September.

Since the decision was announced, numerous police officers have refused to work without an armed colleague or an inspector, due to the heightened terrorist threat.

The Bruxelles Capitale/Ixelles police tried to reassure officers in the middle of the week. They said “the teams sent to roundabouts will mostly be mixed, meaning an officer and an inspector, and they will receive support from rapid intervention teams, who will be there to protect them”.

The Unions say they are now saying something different. “This has since changed, the order has been revoked. Police officers will only be accompanied by an inspector if there are enough available”, they say.

Several dozen officers will take part in Monday’s demonstration.
