A mouse infestation has been discovered in the building of the Federal Parliament in the Brussels Rue de la Loi, MPs of the House of Representatives and the Senate have been asked to store leftover food in a well-sealed container from now on.

Recently, several mice have been spotted in the Palace of the Nation (the official name of the building that houses the two chambers of the Federal Parliament). Members of Parliament, members of the Senate and employees were informed of the problem.

Everyone who works in the building was asked to "put all food items in the office in a plastic or metal container and close it tightly" because the mice are inventive and have also made their way into the drawers in some offices.

"I have not seen one myself, but my employee has," MP for the Flemish nationalist rightwing N-VA party Theo Francken said on Flemish radio. "Apparently, they got out of the Senate and the problem is only getting worse."

While some are implying that MPs who often eat in the plush seats of Parliament are to blame for the infestation, but Francken stressed that this is not possible as eating during the plenary sessions is not allowed. "Only water and coffee are served there. The mice are mainly in the offices and the dining and living areas."

Meanwhile, professional help is needed and Parliament is looking for an exterminator to tackle the mouse infestation and various tenders are now being issued.
