Brussels attacks: Suspected terrorist captured at Meiser

A counter-terrorism operation took place on Friday afternoon at Place Meiser in Schaerbeek. The news agency Belga reports that the bomb squad and special police unit have left the place.

During the operation which began around 13.45 pm a man was stopped by the police near a tram stop at Avenue Rogier not far from Place Meiser where a security perimeter had been set upp, says the mayor of Schaerbeek, Bernard Clerfayt.

According to eye witnesses, the suspected person had taken a women and a child a hostages before releasing them. The man was “neutralized” by the police. Injured in the leg, he was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

According to the TV company RTBF the person was carrying a bag with explosives and is suspected of having been involved in the terror attacks in Paris and Brussels.

The Reyers-Meiser tunnel has been reopened to traffic. The security perimeter around Place Meiser was kept until about 16 pm.
