Extremist demonstration banned in Molenbeek

A demonstration planned for Saturday by “Generation Identity” has been banned. The event was scheduled to take place at the town square of Molenbeek under the slogan “Molenbeek as everywhere, Islamists out of Europe”.

This was confirmed on Wednesday (30 March) by the mayor of Molenbeek,  Françoise Schepmans (MR-party, Reformist Movement). She is going to sign a police decree banning any demonstrations in the commune.

"Generation Identity" is a nationalist activist movement that was founded in France in 2012, with headquarters in Lyon, and affiliations in other countries. It describes itself as political and calls on youth to "reconquer" space and protest against mass immigration.

“All necessary steps will be taken together with other police districts to prevent extremist groups from coming to Brussels and entering Molenbeek. Extremist groups have no place in Molenbeek. We are going through a difficult period when we must show calm and reflection,” the mayor said.
