The federal prosecutor has confirmed that Mohamed Abrini indeed was the third suspect in the terror attack at Zaventem airport. He was identified thanks to a facial recognition software made available by the American federal police bureau (FBI), reports L’Echo on Friday (15 April).
Investigators encountered several difficulties in analyzing fingerprints and DNA traces in the investigation as to whether Mohamed Abrini was “the man in the hat” visible alongside Najim Laachraoui and Ibrahim El Bakraoui on surveilliance images from the airport.
The FBI came to the help of the Belgian police and proposed the use of Next Gen Identification System, a facial recognition software, which confirmed that it was indeed Mohamed Abrini who appeared on the images.
