Public service and trade union demonstration to take place in Brussels on 31 May

The federal demonstration dedicated to public services on Tuesday May 31st will have an impact upon traffic in Brussels, coming from the direction of the police traffic zone Bruxelles-Capitale/Ixelles on that day.
From 9 a.m, 10,000 demonstrators are expected on the Boulevard Roi Albert II. The procession will leave at 11.00 p.m. From the start of the demonstration through to 3.00 p.m. The police is expecting major disruptions on and around the inner ring road, as well as on the upper section of the City of Brussels district.
 
From 11.00 p.m, the traffic will be prohibited from the tunnels of the inner ring road in the Rogier direction towards Place Louise. The end of the Tunnel Léopold II will also be disrupted as vehicles will have to leave the tunnel towards Place Sainctelette. From 9.30 p.m.  onwards, the exit of the Tunnel Botanique towards Rogier will also be closed. Its reopening will depend upon how the demonstration progresses.

The police also add that the tunnels may be closed to traffic in the other direction, if this is necessary.

Heavy interruptions are expected through to 3.00 pm. although “the police will put everything in place to ensure maximum movement and the most efficient reopening of the inner ring road.”

The public services demonstration is being organized jointly by trade unions. The inter-regional Walloon group of the CGSP has also called for ongoing campaigns from May 31st to “conclude the matter with this government”. Moreover, the CGSP Cheminots (the branch representing the railways) has planned a complete strike on the same day.
