Illicit work in catering sector decreasing

Declared revenues increased by 50 million euro during the first quarter 2016. De Zondage quoted on Sunday (10 July) figures showing that revenues in the “horeca” sector (hotels, restaurants and cafés) had increased during the first quarter 2016 compared with the same quarter 2015.

According to the newspaper different measures to fight undeclared work have started to bear fruit.

“We know that companies are applying the flexi-jobs system and taking advantage of the reduction in social security charges for five employees of their choice,” said Philippe De Backer (Open VLD), state secretary for the fight against social fraud.

The measures were criticized for threatening employment in the sector. “Nothing can be further from the truth,” De Backer said. “During the first quarter of this year, 2 531 more permanent jobs were created in the sector compared with the first quarter 2015.”

“It seems that 2016 will be “the year of the horeca sector”,” he said.
