Stabbing of police officers in Schaerbeek – main suspect’s brother accused of participating in terror group’s activities

Aboubaker D. (46), the brother of a man accused of stabbing two police officers on Wednesday in Schaerbeek, has been charged with participation in the activities of a terrorist group, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office announced on Friday. His brother, Hicham D., attacked two police officers with a knife on Wednesday in Schaerbeek, wounding one in the neck and the other in the abdomen. Neither is in danger. Hicham was later arrested by a police patrol that shot him in the leg. However, he broke the nose of the officer who arrested him.

Since Hicham D. did not make any claims during the attack, his case was handed over to the Brussels Prosecutor’s Office. However, as he was being interrogated by the Federal Judicial Police, he made statements linked to terrorism and his file was handed over to a federal investigating judge specializing in terrorism.

On Wednesday evening his home on Avenue de la Reine in Schaerbeek was searched by police, but the result of the search was not disclosed, nor is it known whether any arms or explosives were found. Also on Wednesday, police detained his brother, Aboubaker D.

On Thursday, Hicham D. was formally accused of attempted murder in a terrorist context and participation in the activities of a terror group.

According to some sources, Hicham D., a former soldier, had been run over by a federal police vehicle a few years ago.  However, this information has not been confirmed by the Office of the Federal Prosecutor.
