The Brussels Court (sitting in chambers) has enforced the European arrest warrant issued by the French authorities for Mehdi Nemmouche. This was announced today (Thursday) by the Federal Prosecutor's Office.
Mehdi Nemmouche was opposed to his extradition to France before his trial for the attack on the Jewish Museum in Brussels on May 24th, 2014.
However, he is not now opposing being handed over to the French authorities.
The French courts requested that Belgium hands Mehdi Nemmouche, aged 31, over to them on August 25th.
Their rationale for requesting this was that the Frenchman, of Algerian origin, should answer the charges relating to illegal confinement of four journalists in Syria.
These were namely Didier François, Edouard Elias, Nicolas Henin and Pierre Torrès.
He was publicly named as one of the jailers in this incident by a number of these journalists.
