“Europe is on standby to help,” the President of the European Council Donald Tusk indicated on the social network Twitter. He was writing of the attack which took place yesterday evening in Berlin’s Christmas Market. It has now taken the lives of least 12 people. Tusk offered his condolences to the victims’ relatives in this same tweet.
Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the European Commission, also offered his condolences.
He considered the news all the more shocking given that the victims were all gathered at an event which is in celebration of Christmas, “a celebration which many associate with peace.”
He also wished the very best of luck to the emergency services for the busy night ahead.
The European Commissioner for Social Affairs, the Belgian Marianne Thyssen, also posted on Twitter that all of her thoughts were with the Berlin victims.
