NATO “concerned” by Trump statements
Frank-Walter Steinmeier has confirmed NATO's concerns about Trump's stance on the Atlantic alliance.

NATO is worried about the remarks by the American President-elect, Donald Trump. He has described the Atlantic alliance as obsolete.

The German Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, confirmed this anxiety today (Monday).

Mr Steinmeier was speaking between a meeting with the General-Secretary of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, and a meeting with the former's EU counterparts in Brussels.

Steinmeier confirmed, “The statements by President-elect Trump that NATO is obsolete are indeed a cause for concern.” The Minister went on, “We will see what the consequences prove to be for American policy.”

Donald Trump, who officially takes office on Friday stated, in an interview with the German daily Bild and the British publication The Times, that NATO was an “obsolete” organisation.

Mr Steinmeier stressed that this remark “contradicts what the (future, editor's note) American Defence Minister said, during his his audience in Washington, just a few days ago.”
