The Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police zone is launching an appeal to the population, to identify the perpetrators of the violence committed on Saturday evening in the centre of Brussels. The police zone indicated on Sunday on the social network Twitter, “All of the images relating to the riots and crimes can be sent, using the following address zpz.polbru.info@police.belgium.eu to the judicial task force created specifically to identify yesterday evening’s perpetrators.”
The fights broke out on Saturday evening in Brussels, after the Moroccan national team qualified for the next FIFA World Cup. They involved some 300 individuals, causing 23 people to be injured, 22 of them being police officers. Two cars were set alight and several shops were looted, whilst installations intended for the Winter Joys event were damaged. No arrests took place. Brussels City Council has promised that sanctions will be imposed if possible.
The Mayor of Brussels City Council, Philippe Close, tweeted, “The identification of the perpetrators must be a priority. We must firmly sanction the troublemakers.” To succeed in this aim, the authorities are requesting the help of individuals with images of the riots and crimes. The local police add, “Victims or other individuals with questions may telephone the 24/7 hotline on the telephone number 02 279 79 09.”
