Jan Jambon: ”A Brussels metropolitan police force is one of the options”

"The proposal of Patrick Dewael to create a Brussels metropolitan police is one of the options that are examined in order to find a structural solution to the police zones in Brussels," said Interior Minister Jan Jambon on Friday. A spokesperson said that the issue is currently discussed with stakeholders.

Patrick Dewael (Open Vld), group leader in the federal parliament, has raised the idea of ??a unified Brussels metropolitan police force under the political responsibility of the Brussels minister-president, charged with the task to define the security policy of the region.

This proposal could offer an alternative to the merger of the six police zones in Brussels. The merger has been rejected by the French-speaking parties and mayors of the communes in the Capital Region.

In such a scenario, the six zones would remain competent for the implementation of the regional security plan through the mayor´s conference. Their tasks would basically be confined to crime prevention and outreach work.
