Power explored at the "Festival des Libertés"

The 2018 edition of “Festival des Libertés”, organised by the Bruxelles Laïque association, will take place from the 18th to the 27th of October. The event will be held at the National Brussels Theatre. The association has said it will take a critical look at the evolution of the world by exploring “Power”.

It is defined as a Human Rights Defence Festival: they see themselves as thought-provokers, fans of subversion, diversity promotors and “inventors of possible”. The Festival offers a mixed program that includes documentaries, debates, theatre conferences, music and exhibitions.

“Power exists. We have to recognise it without demonising it, idealising it or naturalising it. But how do you define it, explore it at this complex and contradictory time?”, the organisers ask. Answering this question is the focus of the festival.

This year also includes an international competition, with more than 30 documentaries taking part. Several awards will be up for grabs.

For music fans, there will be performances by the duo Brigitte (18th of October), Grand Corps Malade (21st of October), Girls in Hawaï (24th of October), Fakear (25th of October), Protoje & The Indiggnation (26th of October) and Femi Kuti & The Positive Force (27th of October).

There will also be theatrical performances, such as “L’Attentat” by Yasmina Khadra and “Le monde renversé” by the Marthe Collective, which criticises patriarchal domination.

Debates, conferences and exhibitions will encourage exchange around the big themes affecting society, including how to go about moving away from the dynamics of power and leadership.
