A demonstration – called "Fascists not welcome" – organised on the Mont des Arts on Whit Monday (tomorrow) in Brussels to protest a major event by the Flemish far-right Vlaams Belang party happening at the same time is allowed to take place after all.

Some 20 organisations, including the socialist trade union, will organise a 'Fascists Not Welcome' demonstration at Place Poelaert in Brussels. It is a protest against the Vlaams Belang demonstration happening at Mont des Arts.

"Their racist, sexist, xenophobic and LGBTQ-phobic discourse reinforces inequalities in society," the organisers said. The call was co-signed by some 40 organisations.

Initially, Brussels City Mayor Philippe Close had banned both the Vlaams Belang event and the counter-demonstration on the grounds of public order, but the Council of State overturned both those decisions, Bruzz reports.

The ban was an unauthorised curtailment of freedom of expression; the ban is therefore suspended and both demonstrations can go ahead, the Council of State confirmed.

Some 500 protesters are expected at the counter-demonstration.
