The body of a man who went missing on Friday has been found in the Brussels canal, a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office confirmed on Sunday.

A man called Ali Hammouni was reported missing on Friday at around midnight.

Police launched a call for witnesses after Hammouni's disappearance, who was last seen around Rue de l'Intendant and in Avenue du Port in the Molenbeek municipality of Brussels.

The body of the 76-year-old man was found in the canal on Sunday, in the vicinity of the shopping mall Docks Bruxsel.

"The body recovered from the canal on Sunday is that of Ali Hammouni, whose disappearance had been reported," the spokesperson told BX1.

A forensic doctor and federal police authorities came to the scene after Hammouni's body was found.

The spokesperson added that there was no indication that a third party was involved in the man's death.
