A fire broke out in an empty petrol station in the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht for the second night in a row. The building has been empty for years and is squatted.
For the second night in a row, an abandoned and squatted petrol station in the Rue des Deux Gares in Anderlecht was on fire, the Brussels fire brigade stated. It concerned a blazing fire in the shop of the former station; no squatters were present.
"The Brussels fire brigade was called out to the station at around 01:10. We found a fierce blaze that we fought with four fire hoses," said fire brigade spokesperson Walter Derieuw.
During the extinguishing, one firefighter was injured by falling debris from a ventilation system. He was transferred to the hospital and cannot return to work for the time being, Derieuw said.
"The intervention ended around 03:00, and the origin of the fire remains to be determined," he added.
No squatters were present when the fire brigade arrived; an investigation will reveal whether they had anything to do with the fire.
