A 2,700-space car park will be built for Brussels Airport staff and car rental services. Preparatory work began this month and the car park should be accessible by the end of 2025, the airport authorities announced on Tuesday.
The vast eight-storey car park will be located opposite the drop-off zone. Passengers wishing to hire a car will be able to access it directly from the terminal via a covered walkway. The new facility will have 617 charging points for electric cars.
The preparatory work, which will last until mid-December, includes the demolition of asphalt, concrete, foundations, pipes, cables, kerbs and lighting pylons. The demolished materials will be removed and reused. The concrete, for instance, will be transferred to the crushing plant located in the cargo area on the airport site and then reused as fill material on the site, explain Brussels Airport officials.
As the existing sewer system will have to be relocated by around 30 metres, outbound traffic on the A201 will have to use two narrow lanes for a fortnight in November.
Brussels Airport is the second largest economic growth centre in Belgium, representing 24,000 direct and 40,000 indirect jobs.
