French company Arkose has announced the construction of a new climbing centre in Saint Gilles.

The company already runs 25 centres across Europe, one of which is based near the canal in the north of Brussels. Its second Belgian project will come to life in an old garage on Rue Eugène Verheggen, on the border between Saint Gilles and Forest.

Climbing enthusiasts will be able to enjoy 2,000 m2 worth of walls approximately 4.9 metres high, with one section for adults and another for children. In addition, a restaurant and bar will be open to non-climbers.

A public enquiry has been launched and is due to conclude on 22 February. Construction will then commence in September 2024 and the centre is expected to open to the public in June 2025.

Arkose says that there is huge demand for climbing in Belgium. Currently, there are 19 climbing centres in the Brussels-Capital Region alone.
