The Brussels Government postponed the adoption of the draft Animal Welfare Code once again on Thursday.

The third and final reading was already on the Council of Ministers' agenda last week. On Thursday it was pushed back again to the next meeting of the Council of Ministers. Once approved, it can be sent to the Brussels Parliament.

Brussels Minister in charge of Animal Welfare Bernard Clerfayt (DéFI) says there is a consensus on the content of the text. However, in the text, there is no mention of unanaesthetised slaughter. The Minister already made an attempt to introduce a ban in 2021, but after no consensus was found within the government, Parliament voted down the ban in mid-2022.

The PS is reportedly reluctant for the text to be debated and voted on in the Brussels Parliament.

"I do not want the text to become hostage to communitarian positions by certain parties," the DéFI minister said when asked after the Brussels Council of Ministers.
