An explosion occurred on Saturday night in a garage of a Brussels residence, according to Brussels Fire Service spokesperson Walter Derieuw.

At around 1:35 AM, firefighters were called to a blaze and explosion in a garage located on Henri Deleers Street in Anderlecht,” Walter Derieuw stated. Upon arrival, significant smoke was noticed throughout all the floors while a fire had broken out and was in full progress in the garage.

The building, undergoing renovations, was unoccupied and stored numerous construction materials and tools. The explosion sent debris flying as far as ten metres away, and the property itself is now ruined.

The Brussels-Midi Police area, present at the site, established a safety perimeter. Neighbouring residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure, but were able to return to their homes a few hours later.

Two fire engines, two turntable ladders, an emergency service unit, an ambulance, as well as a decontamination vehicle were deployed to the scene. Firefighters stayed till 4:00 AM to clear the damage resulting from the incident.

“The cause of the explosion is yet to be identified,” Walter Derieuw said.
