Five giant colourful ducks have been unveiled in the Vismet basins in Brussels. Facing Sainte-Catherine Church, the art installations were presented by the City of Brussels on Monday and will be on show until September.

Family activities are planned on the first Sunday of each month to enliven the area.

Bobbing in the larger of two basins are several giant 3D ducks, which are made from mineral fibre and lit by solar lamps. Standing 1.6 metres to 2.5 metres tall, they take on a golden-orange hue in the evenings thanks to a thermal coating technique.

In the smaller basin, giant multicoloured letters (repurposed from a previous event) bordered by water lilies, spell out "BXL".

Family events will take place every first Sunday of the month, from 14:00 to 19:00. The City promises a wide range of activities, from workshops for children, puzzle and duck fishing, to remote-controlled boats, onboard storytelling and children's paddle boats.

"This project is a part of our commitment to promoting commercial districts while respecting the locals' tranquillity," explained Fabian Maingain, Brussels city councillor for economic affairs.

"It is a fantastic opportunity to discover this historic downtown location in a fun way with friends or family, while also enjoying the local hospitality and retail outlets."

To mark the launch, performances – ranging from singing to tightrope walking – took place in the Vismet basins on Monday, captivating the onlooking passers-by.
