Brussels-based construction company Besix has been awarded a €346 million contract to build a 1.4 km tunnel in the Danish capital Copenhagen by the country's road authority Vejdirektoratet.

Besix, which also worked on Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the tallest tower in the world, is the main contractor in the consortium, alongside Danish company MT Højgaard.

The Nordhavn road tunnel, of which 700 metres will go underwater, will connect the Østerbro district with the capital's ports Svanemøllehavn and out to Nordhavn, improving access to the port's activities in the area and also removing heavy traffic from the rest of the road network in the region.

The scope of works also covers local roads and junctions to be built in connection with the tunnel, as well as mechanical and electrical installations and the inclusion of various traffic control and monitoring systems.

Besix previously built the Crown Princess Mary Bridge in Frederikssund on behalf of the Danish Road Administration. The bridge, completed in 2019, was Besix's first project in Denmark.

The construction of the tunnel will take about five years to be completed and are expected to start immediately when the contract is signed in mid-September.
