Broaching the subject of a pay rise can be an uncomfortable conversation that Belgians are statistically shy to discuss with bosses. Six in ten employees have never asked their bosses to increase their wage, according to a survey published on Tuesday by recruitment company Robert Half.

These conversations most typically occur towards the end of the year. Wage indexation rolls around at the start of the year, and around a quarter of employees are thinking about asking for a salary increase in 2023. 46% of employees surveyed stated that they have received a salary increase in the last year, either through wage indexation or by other means.

Given the drastic increase in inflation and wage indexation this year, it is becoming increasingly difficult for employees to negotiate any additional wage increases, Robert Half warns.
