Following challenging periods due to the pandemic and material shortages, the Belgian car market has recovered significantly, growing by more than the average for the various European markets.
Almost 35,000 new cars were registered in July, marking an increase of 32.5% compared with July 2022, figures published on Tuesday by the FPS Mobility and Belgium's automotive industry federation Febiac, showed. This means the new car market recorded its 12th consecutive month of growth.
"It should be noted that over the first half of the year, the Belgian car market as a whole grew faster than the average for the various European markets (+35.4% versus +17.8%), making Belgium the third fastest-growing market in Europe," the report noted.
Since the start of the year, no fewer than 299,144 new cars have been registered in Belgium. "This is the best cumulative result for this period since 2020," Febiac noted in a press statement. In July, cars registered by companies again accounted for the majority of new registrations (almost 68% of the market).
The light commercial vehicle market closed with a further monthly increase in registrations (+37.9%), as did the market for heavy commercial vehicles weighing less than 16 tonnes (+39.7%). The number of heavy commercial vehicles weighing 16 tonnes or more sold jumped by over 70% in July.
The market for motorised two-wheelers "continued to show positive momentum in July," with a monthly increase of 8.3% in the number of new motorbikes, scooters, tricycles and light quadricycles registered.
