Uber launches in Wallonia on Wednesday. The UberTaxi platform is now available in Liège, Mons and Namur, enabling licensed taxi drivers to offer their services to passengers via the app.

Upon opening the Uber app, customers can access the yellow cars denoting the UberTaxi option. After designating their destination, they are connected with the nearest available taxi. Similarly, this service mirrors the LVC (car rental with driver) option available in other Belgian regions and abroad.

The fare is determined by the taximeter, with payment made through the app once the journey concludes.

The service aims to simplify the process of connecting professional taxi drivers with additional customers in Liège, Mons and Namur. It also addresses requests from passengers and drivers, explains Laurent Slits, Uber’s Operations Manager in Belgium.

"Several thousand people would open the app and instantly close it as the service was unavailable in Wallonia. After discussions with drivers in these three Walloon cities, we were well received. The platform creates income for the drivers, brings passengers and a functional app. It’s additional business," said Slits.

Dozens of taxi drivers in Liège, Namur and Mons have reportedly already decided to join Uber. The platform expresses hope to attract more drivers in the coming months and expand to other cities in Wallonia.

The app is already available in Brussels and numerous cities in Flanders.
