Five students appear in court in connection to fatal hazing case

The prosecution on Friday requested community service for five students who appeared before the Liège Criminal Court in connection with a fatal hazing ceremony.

The victim, 21-year-old Axel Leroy from Spa, died on the night of 30 to 31 October 2018. He collapsed after drinking large amounts of alcohol in a short time, in the presence of the five other students, and choking on his vomit.

The five, aged between 22 and 25 years, initially risked up to ten years in prison, since the Office of the Public Prosecutor had wanted to prosecute them for administering alcohol to an already drunk person.

However, because of their young age and since they have committed no previous offences, community service has now been requested.

The defence will make its presentation on 9 December.
