The Commission launched on Friday a new self-assessment tool that allows citizens to test their digital skills and access training opportunities tailored to their needs.

Digital skills are important for working, studying, accessing services and buying products, or keeping in touch with friends and family. According to the Commission, 90% of jobs currently require digital skills.

The tool is available on the EU's Digital Jobs and Skills Platform in the 24 official EU languages, as well as Icelandic, Norwegian, Macedonian, Serbian and Turkish. Based on the Digital Skills Framework, this free test covers information and data education, communication and collaboration, digital content creation, security and problem solving.

The test takes around 20 minutes to complete and, once done, the respondent gets a summary report on the test results and an assessment of the proficiency level.

In the test, the respondent is asked to score his or her skills according to a scale (I don't know how to do it, I can do it with help, I can do it on my own, I can do it with confidence and, if needed, I can support/guide others) and to reply to a number of knowledge questions (true/false).

The test covers the set of skills needed to search for, access and navigate between different types of digital content (files, websites, etc.). This also includes being able to compare different sources of information and understand which ones are reliable. The ability to store, manage, and organise folders and various types of files is part of this competence area as well.

“For Europe to be successful in its digital transition, we must invest in digital skills for all, so that everyone has a level of digital skills that will allow us to use the internet and technological tools,” said Thierry Breton, Internal Market Commissioner (10 December).
