Swedish national Anders Sjöborg became Deputy Chief Executive of the European Defence Agency on 1 April 2026.

Sjöborg previously held senior roles at Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), the government body that procures military equipment and logistics for the Swedish Armed Forces, the EDA announced on Wednesday.

He oversaw legal and security aspects of major acquisition programmes and represented Sweden in European cooperation on armaments and capability development.

“Anders Sjöborg will be a strong addition to EDA at a time when we must expand our support for joint procurement initiatives, helping member states translate political commitment into concrete acquisition programmes,” EDA Chief Executive André Denk said in the statement.

Sjöborg said the agency’s work covers “all aspects of EU defence cooperation” and that he looked forward to working with staff “from across Europe.”

Replacing an acting deputy

Sjöborg succeeds Denk, who served as Deputy Chief Executive from February 2023 to May 2025 before becoming Chief Executive, the EDA informed.

Stefano Cont had held the deputy role on an acting basis while also serving as the agency’s Capability and Armaments Director.
