The European Union has condemned the killings of three Indonesian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in separate incidents in southern Lebanon.
Two Indonesian peacekeepers died on 30 March when an explosion destroyed their vehicle in the south of the country, with the cause not yet known, according to the UN agency responsible for the mission.
A day earlier, another Indonesian peacekeeper was killed when a projectile of unknown origin struck southern Lebanon, the same UN account said.
The deaths came amid ongoing exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah.
The EU Delegation and EU member states’ diplomatic missions in Indonesia offered condolences to the families of those killed, to Indonesia, and to others affected, the European External Action Service (EEAS) said.
EU backs UN condemnation
The EU missions said they echoed a statement by the UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson condemning the incidents that led to the deaths of the three Indonesian peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL, according to the EEAS.
They also stated that international law requires the safety and security of UN personnel and property to be ensured at all times.
UNIFIL is the UN peacekeeping mission deployed in southern Lebanon to monitor hostilities and support stability along the border area.
