The European Commission has published a staff working document on cutting greenhouse gas emissions in aquaculture by improving energy efficiency and using more renewable power.
The document focuses on primary aquaculture production and compiles best practices and practical tools from EU member states, as well as the United Kingdom and Norway, reflecting their aquaculture industries and links to the EU, the Commission reported on Thursday.
It also sits behind an online training course based on the document, titled “Implementing the Strategic Guidelines on EU Aquaculture Energy Transition in the EU Aquaculture Sector.”
What the training covers
The course offers an overview of energy use and technologies across different aquaculture systems, and sets out measures to decarbonise operations — meaning cutting emissions linked to energy use, the Commission said.
It includes examples of energy-efficiency measures and emissions reductions from both EU and non-EU countries, and discusses challenges such as knowledge gaps, technology development and regulatory frameworks.
The training is designed to take about one hour to complete, and is available via the Commission’s aquaculture website.
