EU fuel costs soar 16.9% in one year amid uneven trends

Fuel and lubricants for personal transport cost 16.9% more in the EU in July 2026 than a year earlier.

The year-on-year rise followed annual increases of 20.7% in May and 13.7% in June, Eurostat reported on Friday.

Prices were higher than a year earlier in 25 of the bloc’s 27 member states, with annual increases in July larger than in June in 13 countries.

However, the annual rate in July was lower than in May in 24 countries.

The biggest year-on-year increases in July were recorded in Romania (24.2%), Germany and Lithuania (22.9% each), Bulgaria (22.2%), the Netherlands (22.0%) and Finland (20.5%).

Prices fell slightly in Hungary ( - 0.1%), while the smallest rises were in Sweden (1.2%) and Ireland (3.2%).

Diesel and petrol rose again month on month

Diesel prices rose 4.3% across the EU in July compared with June, while petrol prices increased 4.7%, Eurostat said.

In June, diesel had fallen 6.4% compared with May and petrol was down 4.2%.

Between June and July, diesel prices increased in 17 countries, with the largest rises in Poland (13.4%), Germany (12.7%) and Greece (12.1%).

The biggest decreases were in Cyprus ( - 7.9%), Sweden ( - 7.4%) and Ireland ( - 6.4%).

For petrol, 14 countries recorded month-on-month increases and 12 saw decreases between June and July.

The biggest rises were in Poland (17.2%), Germany (11.0%) and Spain (7.1%), while the steepest falls were in Sweden ( - 11.1%), Cyprus ( - 5.4%) and Ireland ( - 4.1%).
