Libyan representatives taking part in a UN-facilitated “Small Convening” have signed an agreement on reconstituting the board of the High National Elections Commission and on an electoral framework, the EU Delegation and EU member states’ diplomatic missions in Libya said.
The joint statement, issued in Tripoli on Saturday, described the deal as progress in the UN-led political process and welcomed the announcement of the agreement by the Libyan participants, the European External Action Service (EEAS) reported.
The High National Elections Commission is the body responsible for organising and overseeing elections in Libya.
The EU statement said the House of Representatives and the High Council of State should engage with the outcome and take steps to implement it “without delay”.
Support for UN mediation
The EU Delegation and EU countries’ diplomatic missions said they continued to support the work of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, known as UNSMIL, and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative Hanna Tetteh.
They added that the process should be “Libyan-led and Libyan-owned” and said they would continue to support Libya’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
