The EU-Ukraine summit scheduled for 3 February will take place in Kyiv and not in Brussels, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office said after a telephone conversation on Monday with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

For the EU, only Ms. von der Leyen and Charles Michel, President of the European Council, will participate. There will be no heads of state or government, a spokesman for Mr. Michel said ten days ago.

With the summit now taking place in Kyiv, speculation about a new foreign trip by the Ukrainian president can now cease.

Mr. Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington in December was his first abroad since the start of the invasion of his country. After that visit, the Ukrainian president also received an “open invitation” to Brussels, but it is yet to be taken up.

Mr. Zelenskyy has addressed European leaders at several summits in recent months, but always via video link.
