Facebook's parent company Meta has been fined €1.2 billion for breaching the European Union's data protection rules (GDPR), the highest fine ever imposed in Europe for such an offence.

The decision was issued by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), which acts on behalf of the EU and found that Meta was "continuing to transfer personal data" of users from the EU27 Member States to the United States.

The company plans to appeal the decision, which is its second fine from the DPC this year. They were forced to pay over €400 million by the European regulator for forcing Facebook users to accept targeted ads.
