The European Commission has allocated €20 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Haiti amid unprecedented gang violence.

This funding aims to support on-the-ground humanitarian partners in addressing the population’s most urgent needs. These include protection, food aid, health care and a designated portion for education to continue children’s schooling during the crisis.

"We cannot stand by as Haiti’s humanitarian situation deteriorates," stated Europe’s Crisis Reaction Commissioner, Janez Lenarčič. He added the new funding would assist partners in providing urgent help to the most vulnerable populations.

Haiti is the largest recipient of European Union humanitarian aid in Latin America and the Caribbean, with approximately €500 million disbursed since 1994.

The Caribbean country has been plagued by armed group violence, terror and calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who stepped down on Monday. An emergency was declared last week following hospital attacks and thousands of prison escapes.

The World Food Programme (WFP) raised an alarm Tuesday, warning Haiti was on the brink of a devastating food crisis with aid operations at risk of stopping.

The UN reports that nearly 4,000 people were killed and 3,000 abducted last year in Haiti. Since the start of 2024, at least 35,000 people have fled their homes in the escalating crisis.
