The EU has imposed sanctions on 33 individuals allegedly connected to the death of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny while he was imprisoned in Siberia, High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell announced on Friday.

Details of the sanctions followed a decision made by Foreign Affairs Ministers on the preceding Monday.

Two penal colonies where Navalny was held were also targeted. They are notorious for physical and psychological pressure, isolation, torture and violence exerted on prisoners, according to an EU statement.

Leaders of these colonies have now joined the sanctioned list alongside judiciary members, including Andrey Suvorov, who sentenced Navalny to 19 years imprisonment last year. Other judges involved in Navalny's case and political repression in Russia are also on the list.

These sanctions also target high-ranking officials from the penal system and the Justice Department. All of them now face a freeze on their assets, a financing ban within the EU and travel restrictions.
