Coraline Radermecker, a veterinary doctor at the University of Liège, has won the Baillet Latour Biomedical Award for her research in the fields of cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
She received the honour on Wednesday from Queen Mathilde at the Palace of the Academies in Brussels.
The Baillet Latour Biomedical Award aims to support young researchers in the biomedical sciences in Belgium. The winner receives €1 million in research funding for the next five years.
This year’s award was given to Radermecker for her study of the role of lung neutrophils in cardiorespiratory physiology and endothelial reactivity. Her research focuses on analysing how granular white blood cells in lung vessels contribute to respiratory processes and interact with capillaries, both in healthy lungs and in the event of diseases linked to vascular disorders.
The project has the potential to unveil new therapeutic options for a range of conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer.
The Biomedical Award, presented annually since 2022, covers different domains each year. This year, it focused on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. In 2026, it will target metabolism and the gastrointestinal tract, in 2027 infection and immune diseases, in 2028 neuroscience, and in 2029 cancer research.
The aim is to address a broad spectrum of health challenges.
