On Tuesday, an all-terrain wheelchair known as a “joëlette” will begin an ambitious journey across Wallonia, organised by Altéo and the Christian Mutuality (MC).
The team will set off from Tournai and is scheduled to arrive in Verviers on 2 September. Each day’s route will start from an MC building and finish at the town hall of the destination, where participants will meet local officials and stakeholders to present their political demands advocating for accessible and truly inclusive communities.
The initiative also aims to raise funds for projects supported and financed by Cap48.
The daily routes, spanning 25 to 40 kilometres, will be completed by mixed teams of able-bodied participants and individuals with disabilities. Walking clubs, associations, local citizens, and volunteers will lend their support to this collective endeavour, Altéo stated.
Among the key demands to be highlighted are bridging the digital divide, raising police awareness about designated accessible parking spaces, increasing the employment of individuals with disabilities, and ensuring that municipal sports and cultural infrastructure is accessible to everyone.
Altéo and the Christian Mutuality are calling on communities, sports clubs, associations, and citizens to join the initiative. “This project is a unique opportunity to take a strong stand for inclusion, share an inspiring human experience, and help change mindsets,” the organisers concluded.
