Coronavirus cases up 84%, hospitalisations continue to rise

Since 3 January, over 20,000 new Covid-19 cases have been recorded every day in Belgium, with an average of 182 people admitted to the hospital daily, according to preliminary figures announced on Monday by the cabinet of Federal Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke.

There are now a total of 1,889 coronavirus patients in hospitals, 442 of whom are in intensive care.

Between 31 December and 6 January, more than a quarter (25.16%) of the Covid-19 tests taken were positive. Of the 537,647 tests that were administered, 135,289 were positive.

During this same period, there was an average of 18,637 infections per day, an increase of 84% compared to the previous week.

Since 3 January, the number of daily infections has even exceeded 20,000, with 27,518 cases recorded on Monday 3 January, 28,043 on 4 January, 25,964 on 5 January and 23,547 on 6 January.

The figures were announced by the cabinet of Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke on the basis of data from the health institute Sciensano. Because the Sciensano dashboard is not updated on Mondays, it doesn’t reflect the current situation.
