Over 2,800 patients hospitalised with Covid-19 in Belgium

Between 15 and 21 January, an average of 271 patients suffering from coronavirus were admitted to hospital every day – up by 43% on the previous seven days, according to the figures published by the Sciensano Public Health Institute on Saturday morning.

In total of 2,851 people are currently in Belgian hospitals due to an infection, out of which 364 are treated in intensive care units, a decrease of 11% compared to the previous week.

Between 12 and 18 January 35,975 new coronavirus infections were identified on average every day – up by 49% on the previous seven days.

During this period, an average of 22.1 Covid-19 patients died per day, up by 10% since last week. Total deaths in Belgium since the beginning of the pandemic amount to 28,800.

The reproduction rate (Rt) has once again increased to 1.29 (+23%). This figure represents the average number of people that contract the virus from each infected person, and when it is above 1, it means that the epidemic is gaining ground in Belgium.
