Several spices and meal boxes have been recalled by Belgium's Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FAVV) due to possible health risks.

Hours after the FAVV announced it would be temporarily closing the Ferrero factory in the Walloon city of Arlon linked to hundreds of Salmonella outbreaks in Belgium and Europe, the agency recalled various spice products and Thai marinated beef strips, according to reports from Belga News Agency.

FAVV recalled various Verstegen products on Friday, following a RASFF (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) notification concerning the possible presence of Salmonella in various spices containing lemongrass.

These include"Gemalen Citroengras, Java blend for Nasi/Bami with ginger and citronella, Mix Saté and Mix Nasi/Bami goreng from the brand Verstegen, which were sold until 7 April in Jumbo and Albert Heijn stores.

The agency has asked people not to consume these products and to return them to the point of sale where they were purchased. Consumers can also contact the FAVV on 0800/13.550 or pointdecontact@afsca.be if they have more questions about the products and risks involved.

Recalled meal boxes

In consultation with the FAVV, and in light of the possible presence of Salmonella in lemongrass products, meal box provider Smartmat has recalled its "One Meal Box," specifically for the 300 grams of Thai marinated beef strips (spiced with lemongrass) they contain, the company announced on Saturday.

Smartmat is asking its customers not to consume the meal packs with lot numbers 220404 and 220405, which expire on 10 and 11 April and were sold in various Okay shops between 4 and 11 April this year and to return them to the point of sale for a refund.

Customers who need more information can contact Smartmat's customer service department on 09/298.05.10 or by e-mail at foodlover@foodbag.be.
