The Covid-19 pandemic slowed down even further last week across the world. The number of new cases has decreased more than the number of new victims.

According to data released Wednesday evening by the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, fewer than 2.7 million new infections were reported last week in different countries. This represents a decline of 15%.

By region, only the American continent saw an increase of 2%. In the other territories, the number of new cases has decreased slightly in part of Asia, but by more than 40% in Africa.

In Europe, the number of new cases has fallen by almost a quarter. In terms of deaths, just over 8,500 new victims were identified last week, a 13% decrease over one week.

Only the Eastern Mediterranean saw a deterioration, with an increase of 9%.

The decrease ranged from 1% in the Americas to more than 70% in Africa, and in Europe it reached almost a quarter. The Omicron variant still accounts for almost all sequencing in a month.

In total, more than 6.5 million people have died from the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic. More than 625 million have been infected.
