You can complain about Belgium, but you can’t deny that they know a thing or two about comfort food. On a cold winter afternoon, nothing beats a hot, sticky Belgian waffle straight from the griddle.

Of course, you might want to argue about whether Brussels waffles are better than Liège waffles. But let’s leave that for Twitter. All you need to know is that Une Gaufrette Saperlipopette in the heart of Liège does a very good waffle.

The owner Eric Michaux faithfully follows a traditional recipe to make fluffy waffles using the best butter, eggs and sugar. He sells them in a tiny shop around the corner from the lively Place du Marché.

You may have to queue outside for a while because word is getting around.
