Hidden Belgium: Surf the waves at the Belgian beach

No need to say anything. We all know the Belgian beach is not Santa Monica. It’s not a surfing paradise. But it can be friendly. Even cool.

There are several surf clubs along the windswept Belgian coast where hardy surfers squeeze into wetsuits to ride the North Sea waves. You can find them at Oostduinkerke, Bredene, Blankenberge and Zeebrugge.

The Icarus surf school in Zeebrugge is one of the best. The club is based in a wooden cabin on Zeebrugge beach with a bar looking out on the sea. The spot is also popular with kite surfers and paddle boarders.
