Hidden Belgium: La Porteuse d’Eau

Hidden Belgium: La Porteuse d’Eau

Named after a statue in Saint-Gilles commune, La Porteuse d’Eau is a romantic Brussels café on two floors with stained glass windows and a beautiful spiral staircase.

It occupies a corner building designed by the Brussels Art Nouveau architect Ernest Blérot, who signed his design on a stone to the right of the entrance. The interior is not original Art Nouveau, but it is still a beautiful spot to meet a friend on a winter evening.

Derek Blyth’s hidden secret of the day: Derek Blyth is the author of the bestselling “The 500 Hidden Secrets of Belgium”. He picks out one of his favourite hidden secrets for The Brussels Times every day.
