Hidden Belgium: Bontwerkersplaats

Not many people know about the 15th-century Antwerp almshouse hidden behind a house on Wolstraat.

A blue street sign at number 37 is the only clue. Push open the blue door to discover this secret spot.

The buildings around the courtyard were built in 1422 by the guild of furriers as accommodation for old, sick and poor workers, and their widows.

The 14 tiny houses have been privately owned since the 18th century. The fortunate residents sometimes eat meals together at a big table in the garden.
