The trial of Domenico Puddu started on Tuesday, with the man charged with murdering his neighbour Jean-Yves Wargnies (46) in Charleroi, La Libre reports. Puddu claims that he shot Wargnies to death due to his noisy renovation works.

The incident occurred on 30 December 2019 in the municipality of Marchienne-au-Pont, while Wargnies was carrying out some work on his roof with a friend. Puddu went over to complain, telling Wargnies that he was making too much noise.

A heated dispute ensued, with Puddu climbing a ladder to get onto Wargnies’ roof where he shot his neighbour in the leg. The conflict then continued on a nearby street, with Puddu asking Wargnies whether he had called the police. When Wargnies said that he did, Puddu shot him in the head.

The assailant later told investigators that he had intentionally aimed to shoot his neighbour in the head and stated that if Wargnies had not answered him “badly” then “none of this would have happened.” The feud between the neighbours had been going on ever since Wargnies bought his residence in Marchienne-au-Pont in 2016, which he wanted to turn into a loft.

Puddu had already threatened him by allegedly firing a gun and had an extensive criminal record which included prior counts of assault and harassment. A relative told La Libre that “when something bothers him, he becomes obsessive and extremely violent.”

For his part, Wargnies was said to be well-liked in the neighbourhood and was somewhat of a local celebrity as he was part of a rock band in the 1990s.
