The director of a British funeral home has admitted in court to mishandling the funerals of 30 individuals and giving grieving families the ashes of strangers.

Robert Bush, 48, pleaded guilty on Thursday at Hull Crown Court after a police raid in March 2024 uncovered 35 bodies and around 100 urns at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors.

Investigators found one body had been left for a year, while only four were supposed to be at the premises.

Bush had earlier admitted to multiple counts of fraud and faced charges for a total of 67 offences, including stealing money from 12 charities by embezzling donations from families.

He confessed to deceiving families, stealing from them, and handing out the wrong ashes, betraying their trust during moments of grief.

The judge warned that a prison sentence was unavoidable but granted Bush bail, prompting audible discontent from relatives of the deceased present in court.

Sentencing is scheduled for 27 July.
