About 40% of Belgian investors under the age of 35 plan to buy cryptocurrencies in the first half of the year, according to the latest ING Investor Barometer, published on Thursday.

Despite last year’s turbulent economic climate, crypto-currencies have not disappeared from the radar of Belgian investors.

A fifth of all investors in Belgium say they own crypto-currencies such as bitcoin and 8% say they have had them in the past.

Among investors under the age of 35, 41% have crypto-currencies in their portfolios. And 39% of investors think bitcoin will still exist in 10 years.

The barometer also confirms the success of real estate,  named by nearly a third of investors as the best investment for 2023. Real estate was also in first place last year.

For 19% of respondents, equities or equity funds are the best investment in 2023, while 13% prefer gold.

Finally,  while real estate and equities score equally well among men, with about a quarter of the votes each, among female investors real estate (33%) stands out much more than equities (15%) as the number one choice.

“This is a recurring phenomenon. Female investors tend to opt for greater security. And in this respect, real estate is considered safer than shares,” said Peter Vanden Houte, chief economist at ING Belgium.
